Abstract Measurements are reported on the production of dijet events with a leading neutron in ep interactions at HERA. Differential cross sections for photoproduction (Q^2 < 10^-2 GeV^2) and deep inelastic scattering (2 < Q^2 < 80 GeV^2) are presented as a function of several jet kinematic variables. The fraction of leading neutron dijet events with respect to all dijet events is determined as well and given as a function of Q^2 and jet kinematic variables. In photoproduction the relative fraction of dijet events produced by the hadronic component of the photon is significantly lower in events with a leading neutron. The cross sections are found to be in good agreement with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The data are compared to the results of Monte Carlo simulation programs based on leading order QCD. Models in which the photon interacts with a parton of an exchanged pion are able to describe the data.
