\abstractheader{\bf Measurement of Event Shape Variables in Deep Inelastic \\
$ep$ Scattering at HERA\\
H1 Collaboration, DESY}

\abstractbody{
 Data taken with the H1 detector at HERA are used to study
 the variation with $Q$ of the mean
 values of various infra-red safe
 event shape variables, measured in the current hemisphere of the
 Breit frame of reference in the range $7<Q<100\,$GeV.
 This variation is compared with the
 expectations of QCD calculations,
 assuming that hadronisation effects
 may be described by ``power corrections''. The data are used to
 study the form of the power corrections with a view to
 extracting the value of the strong coupling constant,
 $\alpha_s$, and of the free parameter determining the
 strength of the power corrections,
 the universality of which is also examined.
 The extent to which the power correction approach may be applied
 to the description of
 the distributions of the event shape variables is studied.
