Duties Of the FTD On-Call Expert
The on-call rota is organised by Nick Malden on a 2-3 monthly
basis. Everyone on LTA must take their turn in performing on-call
duties. This is a quick guide to what is expected from oncall
experts. Please remember that this list is not exhaustive. You are
expected to use your own initiative! The expert is on call generally
from 9am monday till 10am the following monday. There is an overlap
on mondays between the experts to allow for a full briefing.
- Assume oncall duties will take at least 50% of your time!
- Attend all 9am run meetings on weekdays in room 401 of the north hall. Arrive at
the north hall early and perform checks before
the meeting starts so you can report problems.
- Check L4/5 histos once per day – further instructions are
here. (coming soon - ask Paul Laycock)
- Check the gas history plots -
look for changes here
- Check the trip histories and the current histories. Sometimes the shift crews
make mistakes. You need to check if they have or not. If so, then make a complaint
at the 9am meeting and inform Paul/Eram.
- After the run meeting you should meet with the RAs and inform them of any
developments from the run meeting. Try to keep awake in the meeting since new
conditions / decisions made there may affect or be useful to us. Make sure you know
or find out the names of people who are relevant! If you dont know, then simply
introduce yourself after the meeting and politely ask them their name.
- Make sure you have the on-call handy and that its charged and with
you at all times
- Ensure that if there is any possibility to take cosmic data (field
on or off) that we take this data (raw data / cmd on / cjc in
readout)
- Log all special runs (cosmics / raw-data runs etc) in the FTD
hypernews
- Log any changes in operation (HV settings, channels disconnected,
special runs) in the logfile available here
- During cosmics or special runs check the L4/5 histos / trigger
rates
- During cosmics or special runs assume the shift crews will make mistakes - never
trust the shift crew alone. Double check what they do.
- Summarise the weeks runnning in hypernews end of each week. The
summary reports
- - Should be clear & concise
- - Always include a run number, date/time
- - Give complete information
- - Cross reference where possible eg give URL of related hypernews
- Make sure you know how to use PVSS for HV control and how to
switch HV steering files
- Be prepared to answer shift crew calls 24x7 !!! If possible be
near an internet connection or be prepared to go to the north hall if
needed. Get a bike, learn to drive, start enjoying midnight jogs.
- Prepare DQ plots for DQ meeting (wed pm) or run-co's rep (thu pm).
Consult with Paul Laycock / Eram
- Read run report, hypernews & h1-logbook for each shift (3 x per day). You
should always be aware of what the plans for HERA and data-taking are.
- Enjoy your oncall duties - use it as opportunity to see how H1
operates - not just the FTD
