Proton Structure

Neutral Current Deep Inelastic Scattering

Back to Physics Poster

The inclusive cross section is measured in terms of
  • X = momentum of the scattered parton relative to the proton momentum
  • Q2 = negative squared momentum transfer between lepton and target (resolving power)
and weighted by kinematic factors to give the proton structure function F2. F2 is closely related to the quark distributions of the proton.

The curve is a fit using NLO QCD DGLAP equations.

  • The measurements cover a large region of the sea and valence quark distributions up to x=0.65
  • The gluon contribution to the proton is seen by the strong deviations from F2 being flat in Q2. These scaling violations are the extremely well followed by the QCD DGLAP evolution equations between 1<Q2<15000 GeV2.
  • An enhancement of data above the QCD description is seen at large Q2 and x=0.4. This reflects a non-description of the data by the Standard Model which is at the level of 2 standard deviations using all data taken between 1994-97.
