Abstract In deep inelastic scattering mediated by neutral currents, leading particles are expected on average to be slightly more positive than negative, owing to the presence of valence quarks in the proton. Measurements of this excess, as a function of x and Q2, are presented and compared with predictions from various QCD models. The excess in charged current events, where the effect is larger but the statistics smaller, is also presented.
